Dayagim (Fishermen) Dance: Shalom Hermon Music: Gil Aldema Dayagim is an easy/intermediate-level two-part couple dance. Dayagim and Debka Dayagim were created as part of a trilogy of dances for the "Hapoel" Sports Games in 1956. The dances were made to display the life of Haifa as a harbor town. There was also a dance (which did not become a folkdance) of girls selling fish in the market. Initial formation: Couples face CCW around circle with girls on the outside. Partners join hands behind body in skating position. Part 1: 1-4: Four running steps forward with L-R-L-R. Styling: Lean forward and bend both knees on 1; spring upright on 2. Boy: 5-6: Step-hop forward with L diagonally to left side. 7-8: Step-hop forward with R diagonally to right side. Styling: On 5, throw arms up and to left as though flinging a net. Girl: 5-6: Step-hop forward, crossing L in front of R. 7-8: Step-hop forward, crossing R in front of L. Styling: On 5, throw arms up and to right. Both: 9-12: Join hands in front of body in skating position. Repeat 1-4. Boy: 13-14: Slow stamping step with L to left while lifting girl as she jumps. 15-16: Jump on both feet, landing on R. Girl: 13-14: Step to left (in front of partner) with L and leap onto R, making a full CCW turn and ending up inside of circle. 15-16: Two steps in place with L-R. Both: 17-20: Repeat counts 1-4. 21-24: Release hands. Boy: Girl's steps of counts 5-8. Girl: Boy's steps of counts 5-8. 25-32: Partners face each other; each places right arm around other's waist. 8 running steps, starting with L, to make 1 and 1/2 turns CW. Boy ends on inside with back to center; girl faces him. Part 2: Arms are bent at shoulder level. Partners touch palms. 1-2: Lean to left and bend left knee slightly. Opposite for girl. 3-4: Lean to right and bend right knee slightly. Opposite for girl. 5-8: Lower arms. Boy: Pivot (slightly less than) 90 degrees to the right and run four steps forward, L-R-L-R, passing right shoulders with the girl who was to your right before the pivot. You are changing places with her. On the fourth step, pivot 90 degrees to the right to face a person of the opposite sex. Girl: Same as for boy, except that steps are with R-L-R-L, and you pass right shoulders with the boy who was to your right. 9-16: Repeat 1-8. Girl takes two steps on last count. You should now be facing your original partner (girl on outside, boy on inside). 17-20: Partners join both hands. Boy: Two step-hops forward with L, R. Girl: Two step-hops backwards with L, R. 21-24: Reverse of 17-20. 25-32: Arms in skating position behind body. Make a full turn CCW in place with eight steps (start with L). End in starting position, both partners facing CCW around circle.
