Haroah Haktana (The Little Shepherdess) Notes by Phillip M. Feldman 9/20/1986 This easy circle dance has two parts. First part: Begin facing center. In the original dance, hands were joined during this part, but today the dance is usually done without joined hands. 1-8: These eight counts are essentially the same as a four-count grapevine to the right, but with step-hops instead of steps. To do a grapevine, step to the right with the right, cross the left in front of the right, step to the right with the right, and cross the left behind the right. Now try this with a hop after every step. 9-14: Make a three-step full turn to the right (CW) with R-L-R, hopping after each step. 15-16: Step-hop (in place) on the left. 17-32: Repeat 1-16. Styling: On 13, raise hands above head and snap fingers. Snap fingers again on 15. Second part: This part has two figures-- A and B. Figure A: 1-4: Take two step-hops into the circle (R-L), clapping on 3. 5-8: Take two step-hops out of the circle (no clap). 9-12: Take two step-hops in place. 13-24: Repeat 1-12. Styling: Clap on 3 by swinging the right arm in a large circle (first up and then down), bringing the right hand down to meet the left. Swing the left hand up on 5 and snap the fingers. Swing the right arm up and snap fingers on 7. On 9 (both hands are still up) lean right and snap fingers; on 11 lean left and snap fingers. Figure B, version # 1: 1-2: Step-hop on right and kick forward with the left. 3-4: Quick L-R in place. 5-6: Step-hop on left and kick forward with the right. 7-8: Quick R-L in place. Note that 5-8 are the mirror image of 1-4. Figure B, version # 2: 1-2: Step-hop on right and kick forward with the left. 3-4: Step-hop on left and kick forward with the right. 5-7: Three quick stamps (R-L-R), with no weight on the third stamp. 8: Hold for one count. Structure of dance: Parts 1 and 2 alternate, 1-2-1-2-1-2.
