Alternative opinions on the meanings of and differences between Impressionism and Expressionism can be found here: https://www.quora.com/Whats-the-difference-between-expressionism-and-impressionism-art-music. The first two items in that article are well thought-out and argued, but I nevertheless believe that one cannot draw a clean boundary between Impressionism and Expressionism, and that a single piece can be both Impressionistic and Expressionistic; the Kirchner piece from the exhibit seems to fall into this category. Despite the title of the exhibit, The Poplars at Saint-Remy seems to me primarily Impressionist.
