Shiru HaShir Dance by Leah Bergshtein Notes by Phillip M. Feldman 25 Apr, 1986 Revised 9 Aug, 1987 Shiru HaShir is an easy two-part circle or line dance. (It works best if the circle is broken in places). Hands are joined at waist level throughout the dance. The introduction has seven counts; the whole dance repeats four times (three times in the Karmon recording). These notes depart slightly from the original choreography to reflect the way the dance is done today. Part 1: 1-4: Four large running steps forward with R-L-R-L. 5-7: Three jumps with feet together: left, right, and left. 8-11: Kick forward with L and run 3 steps backwards with L-R-L. 12-13: Step-hop back onto R and kick forward with L. 14-15: Step-hop in place on L and kick backward with R. 16-30: Repeat 1-15. Transition: (Facing center) four cancan-style kicks: 1: Hop on L and kick forward with R. 2: Step in place on R. 3: Hop on R and kick forward with L. 4: Step in place on L. 5-8: Repeat 1-4. Part 2: Facing center and travelling CCW (to right): 1-2: Step to right with R and begin to swing L behind R. 3-4: Step-hop on L. Styling: On 1, bend forward and lift arms backwards and up. On 3, straighten body and swing arms forward and up. 5-16: Repeat 1-4 three more times. Counts 17-28 are essentially two double-chirkassias, with the last two counts of the second double-chirkassia modified: 17-19: Cross R in front of L, rock back onto L, and step to right with R. 20-22: Mirror image of 17-19: Cross L in front of R, rock back onto R, and step to left with L. 23-25: Repeat 17-19. 26-28: Cross L in front of R, and pushing off of L and twisting to face CW, leap backward onto R and step back onto L.
